A threaded insert is a fastener component that can be used as an alternative to through bolting items together. A wonderful use for threaded inserts is mounting deck hardware onto boats. Instead of drilling holes all the way through the deck to mount hardware with bolts and nuts, simply drill and tap a hole into the deck matching the external thread of the insert. Coat the threaded hole and the outside of the insert with epoxy. Finally, screw the insert into the threaded hole in the deck with a hex driver, such as an allen wrench. When the epoxy hardens, you will have a Grade 5 (Ti-6AL-4V threaded fastener in the deck that is corrosion free forever and 3-1/2 times stronger than stainless steel. The major benefit of this method is a vessel deck that can never leak. Hex drive Titanium threaded inserts can be used in aluminum, wood and fiberglass for mounting stanchions, bow pulpits, liferaft cradles as well as dodgers and bimini tops.
