During the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation (Trail of Tears), Tsali and his sons voluntarily surrendered to U.S. troops so the Oconaluftee Cherokee who had not yet been rounded up would be allowed to remain in North Carolina. They were executed — some accounts say by a hooded Cherokee who was forced to carry out the sentence.This haunting figure with axe on shoulder has become one of the most recognized symbols of that sacrifice and is the reason the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians still has a homeland in the Great Smoky Mountains today.
